A convex product has a raised bump on the adhesive surface of the baseplate or pouch. This bump directs some pressure onto the skin around the stoma. Using a convex product may help prevent leaks by flattening the uneven skin surface allowing a better seal around the stoma. There is a wide variety of convex products available, some are soft some are much firmer, and your Stomal Therapy Nurse may help you find the right one. It is important if you use a firm convex product to see a Stomal Therapy Nurse regularly to check it’s ongoing suitability. If you gain a lot of weight or develop a parastomal hernia, the amount of pressure around the stoma from your convex product may need adjusting.
