How is a stoma made?

The surgeon will no doubt talk to you about what is expected for your surgery, as there are some different ways they may make the stoma. Your stoma will be made while you are having your operation under a general anaesthetic. The surgeon will make a cut through the skin and muscle, bring the piece of bowel tissue through the hole, opening up the stoma onto your abdomen. The surgeon will stitch the edges of the stoma down onto the abdomen and like any wound after surgery, this stitched area will heal over the next few weeks. A stoma pouch will be placed over the stoma.
